Elena
Elena municipality is situated in Central North Bulgaria. It covers the southern part of Veliko Turnovo Region, the Pre-Balkan and the Balkan Mountains, bordering Elena-Tvarditsa Ridge and the foothill on the north of it.
The total area is 671,388 decares and its altitude is from 100 to 1500 m. the landscape is variable – from plain and indulating in the north to mountainous in the south with the typical steep mountainside and indented river valleys.
During the 1980s “Yovkovtsi” artificial dam was built on the river Vesselina. It mainly lies on the territory of the municipality and is the major water supplier for the towns in the region. Apart from this one, there are 8 smaller dams, which were used for irrigation purposes in the past.
There are no mineral resources. The municipality is rich in woods and a great variety of game.
Elena is bordered by 6 municipalities from 5 regions: on the north – by Zlataritsa (Veliko Turnovo Region), on the northeast – by Antonovo (Targovishte Region), on the east – by Sliven (Sliven Region) and on the south, along the Balkan Mountains Ridge – by Tvarditsa (Sliven Region) and Gurkovo (Stara Zagora Region). The municipal center is 41 km from Veliko Turnovo, 20 km from Zlataritsa, 75 km from Kotel, 79 km from Sliven, 40 km from Tvarditsa and 53 km from Gurkovo.
The only town of the 125 settlements is the municipal center Elena. The population is 12,300 people, 2/3 of which live in the town. The surrounding villages, some of which are inhabited by only 20 people, are scattered high in the mountain.
